When did globalization begin?
• The first great expansion of European capitalism taking place in the 16th century
• big expansion in world trade and investment in the late nineteenth century
• A sense that the world was united was generated by the establishment of the International Date Line and world time zones
• great expansion of capitalism with the development of multinational
companies after the Second World War
• The fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union ended the cold war between the forces of capitalism and socialism with capitalism triumphant
• The development of the internet made possible the organization of business on a global scale with greater facility than ever before
Who are the main players of globalization?
The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established in 1995 to administer the rules of international trade agreed to by its 123 member countries. These rules have been ratified by the parliaments of all members.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was established in the wake of the World War II in 1946 to:• promote international cooperation on finance,
• encourage stability in exchange rates
• providing temporary assistance for countries suffering balance of payments problems
The World Bank provides loans to poor countries for development projects. The bank provides loans for investment projects, such as water and sanitation, natural resource management education and health. It also lends for what it calls adjustment projects, which are to support governments undertaking policy reforms, such as improved public sector management.
Established at the conclusion of the Second World War, the United Nations has become a promoter of globalization, arguing that individual states have a dual role with responsibilities to both their own citizens and to the world society as a whole.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) develops economic and social policy for its 29 members (among other members also Poland)
1. Anti –free trade:
• Ralph Nader's Public Citizen organization (based In US)
2. Environmentalists:
• Environmentalist groups, such as Friends of the Earth, The Sierra Club and Greenpeace argue that globalization harms the environment
In general they blame global corporations for global warming, the depletion of natural resources, the production of harmful chemicals and the destruction of organic agriculture
3. Left critics of capitalism:
• The World Social Forum emerged as a counterpoint to the World Economic Forum
• Marxist organizations see globalization as the spread of capitalism, in which the labor of the poor is exploited for the benefit of the rich
4. Business organizations threatened by international competition:
• Many companies in rich countries oppose globalization because they fear that competition from imports will cost them money
The Dessert
On the end of that part of presentation I have a short video about globalization and global culture. I hope you enjoy :)
Questions:
· We know when the globalization starts. Do you think you can predict when it stops?
· According to “Did You Know” movie – do you think your specialization will be still in-demand job in next 5 years?
Iam scared after watching this movie:).It's hopeless. But I belive people have some abilities that computers never will have.
ReplyDelete.and globalization wil stop when our planet won't exist anymore.
In my opinion globalizantion won't stop until human will discover way to teleport ;) globalization will exist but it won't develope any more.
ReplyDeleteI think there will be always demand on It guys.
I am of the opinion, that globalization will never stop. Each day new product is being developed and everybody wants to have it just to make the life easier. It is obvious that the same product is not being developed at the same day but by different people in various countries. If something is being developed in one country by one company why should everybody repeat this. Knowing that globalization makes our life easier and opens our countries for development, it will probably never stop.
ReplyDeleteThe move was scaring, but I believe that computer is just a machine and it belongs to a system that is not as perfect as human knowledge. Just think, who did invent the computers. It was human, and it is human who has the power to destroy them.
Globalization will continue unltil everything will be globalized which on the other hand might never happened.
ReplyDeleteI don't worry about my job because as long as computer will not be inteligent enought to write programs there will be a need for programers :)
people always will be needed:) we don't have to be worry about that. But we have to remember to develop our skills and I don't mean computer skills:) people who work with comp everyday they very often forget how to use pen or pencil..this is a huge problem I think.)
ReplyDeleteGlobalization will never stops because world can`t be totally globalized, so it will continue forever. I think that information management is just on it`s beginning so it will be needed even more when global information will need to be managed ;)
ReplyDeleteThis movie makes me scared!!:) The numbers and all this information! In my opinion globalization will exist for the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteFortunately my specialization is associeate with networks and mobile so I think that I don't have to worry about my job;)
I think that the move you have selected is a bit exaggerated, but is still interesting (entertaining) to watch :)
ReplyDeleteNeither do I think that globalisation will ever stop expanding. As long as new products and services emerge on the market, globalisation will be in effect.
The movie did not change my opinion about my job and I still think it IT was a good choice :)
1. It will never stop as long as the "GLOBE" exists it will last till eternity.
ReplyDelete2. I am not working now but I think my specialization should be able to stand for the next 5 years.
