George Hotz aka geohot – the best hacker in the world? Part 1

George Hotz known as “Geohot” is in my opinion one of the best hackers in the world. George was born in 1989. He was the first person to remove simlock from Apple iPhone and let it launch homebrew applications. A Few days ago Geohot also hacked Sony PS3 – which was considered the most secure game console in the world. My presentation will have 3 parts – in this part I will write about iPhone hacking. In second part I will write about PS3 hacking, and finally in part 3 I will write about his legal problems with Apple and Sony.

When Apple released first iPhone in 2007 George was only 18 years old. First iPhone was sold only in the United States with data plan and simlock on AT&T carrier. After just a few months Geohot was able to remove simlock with a hardware method. You can watch a video below, where he is presenting world first unlocked iPhone.

That was a huge event in hacking world, but not because he was able to do that. He was working with group of hackers known as “iPhone Dev Team” and he didn`t inform the other team members that he is releasing information about being able to unlock iPhone. That is not the way hackers actually work and they blamed him that he wanted the fame just for himself – but they agreed that he made the biggest progress with unlocking iPhone. From that event “geohot” was banned from hacking scene because he was considered to be a megalomaniac. The funnies and most shocking thing is that George traded his first unlocked iPhone 8GB with Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell, for a Nissan Z350 (quite cool car I think :) ) and 3 8GB iPhones . After another few months he released the first tool to remove simlock with software method. George has received considerable attention in mainstream media, including interviews on the Today Show, Fox, CNN, NBC, CBS, G4, ABC, CNBC, and articles in several magazines, newspapers, and websites, including Forbes and BBC. The Forbes article said Hotz hopes to go into neuroscience: "hacking the brain," he called it. In March 2008, PC World magazine listed George as one of the top 10 Overachievers under 21.

Questions:

Are you interested in hacking world?

Do you think there are many genius hackers in the world but they just don`t want to show off?

  1. He seems to be more than intelligent guy and I admire some of his work. Don't forget to write that he isn't the only person that has done this hack. Fail0ver group should be mentioned as the ones that made possible this possible. I recommend below article on this topic.

  3. A few years ago I was interested in this topic and followed it. But now I have no time for it and I'm interested in something else.
I don't think, I know it! There are many talented people who don't want to show off. They do it for themselves - not for public. In Poland there is a man with nickname "Gorion" who considers himself as a great IT specialist and hacker, he made a big halo around him and he was laughed off in the Polish Hacker world.

  4. I think that we have two type of hackers. The ones that want to show the world what they can do and others that work for famous companies and wants to stay anonymous.

I once was, but now I don't follow it.

I think it's true. Hackers are recognised for what they achieve, sooner or later, if you are good, you'll be on everyone's tongues :)

  6. I have got an iPhone myself and I jail-braked it for some time, but it cosed a lot of errors later, so I restored the original software. I personally believe that it is good that there are hackers who brake software limitations because if I buy some device I wont to have full possible control on it not to be controlled by some company.

  7. I am not personally interested in the hackig world, but for suer there are lots of peopel are. I think there are plenty of genius hackers. Some of them probably are not aware of their skills, or simply do not believe in themselves. Some for sure make use of their skills for themselves; therefore, they do not want anybody to know about them.

  8. I think the world is a lot of people who deal with violations of the terms. I do not personally interested in this but I do not think there is something wrong. It is good that there are such people because with them the security they are getting better.

  9. 1. No I am not interested in hacking.

    2. There are many people around the world hack either for fun or for professional issues so it is very hard to say. But I think most people tend not to show off their hacking skills

  10. Hacking is the good toy for young people. They spend really a lot of time to try unlock some systems. When one of them did something incredible then many people admires him. Many companies provide us their products are safe. We trust them but we have to know that security systems are made by people, so they may be broken by people too. It's matter of time before any security will be broken.

  11. In my opinion, hacking is very useful if used with care. Many international companies even pay for hackers to break into the servers so it will be able to "patch a hole"that they managed to find.
Often, however, hackers in an attempt to prove its superiority over systems simply destroy the property of large companies which is unacceptable.
