Should government legalize marijuana? Part II

Before we focus on pros and cons of marijuana legalization it is worth knowing why marijuana was banned in the first place.

First introduction of marijuana to the U.S. was in the early 20th Century. It was brought in by immigrants from Mexico. In the 1930s one filmed a movie called “Reefer Madness” that featured examples of crime and violence through marijuana usage. Many people believed that marijuana was banned because it resembled the usage of alcohol and others that it was seen as an influx of Mexican immigrants.

What do you think could have been the real cause of marijuana ban in the U.S.?

Why is marijuana banned from legal use?

Pros and cons of marijuana legalization

One of the most commonly heard argument is the impact that marijuana has on the economy. Many are asking themselves if legalization brings prosperity for the economy or takes it away?

The above video is part of a CNN program debate about legalization impact on the economy.

What is your take on that matter, do you think that the economy would benefit from legalization or the other way round?

Now let us see how officials see the matter of marijuana usage and legalization. In 2009, in one of his interviews President Obama said "I don't know what this says about the online audience. But, no, I don't think that is a good strategy to grow our economy"

What is your opinion about this quotation? Do you think that the President of the United States of American reacted in a proper way regarding marijuana and its influence on the economy?

Another key argument for legalization is a drop in crime rates.

Legalization would reduce crime, because a lot of violence that is associated with drug markets arises because those markets are underground. By legalizing marijuana significant number of those crimes would be reduced.

Do you think that thanks to legalization the crime rate would go down?

There are also many voices that it is the government who loses the biggest amounts of money due to banned marijuana. Great deal of resources goes into police forces and people responsible for catching marijuana users, officials that deal with the people caught (judges, lawyers, jury). If there are more and more people using marijuana and this tendency cannot be stopped why not legalizing it?

As it can be seen in many statistics in the U.S. there are simply too many people that were thrown into jail because of marijuana possession or usage of it. Shouldn’t the prisons be used in a different way for a better cause?

What is your opinion on this matter? Do you agree that it is the government who would benefit most from marijuana legalization?

Below there is an interesting video I’ve found on YT.

Do you agree with Glenn Beck – Legalization would stop the violence?

Legalization together with some proper regulations could lead to a drop in violence. People would not have to hide themselves and pretend that they do not use or possess marijuana. The best example here is alcohol. If it worked in the case of alcohol it can work in the case of marijuana.

Do you agree with the above statement? If we legalize marijuana will it have the same effect as was in the case of alcohol in the 1920s and 1930s in the U.S.?

  1. I don't think marijuana is good, but it's better (healthier) than alcohol or cogarettes. I thing it should be legalized with some proper regulations (as Hubert said). Smoking in public could be banned (as in case of cigarettes).
Legalization could have a bad sides for ex. taxes/excises. It's all about politics...

  2. In my opinion we should legalize marijuana but with some restrictions. For example children couldn’t buy it and adults couldn’t have too much of it or smoking in public places is prohibited. It would make people turn back from illegal dealers and stop violence, because it would be able to buy pure and safe drugs without any risk from trusted source.

  3. Maybe it could sound conservative but I’m against legalization of marihuana. Most of drugs are made of natural plants or crops.
When people from the government legalize ‘soft-drugs’ why shouldn’t them permit for something more? Why cocaine couldn’t has an open access? Thought it’s become from coca leaves. It’s natural, it’s eco… In my opinion legalizing marihuana would be a first step to ‘drug’s anarchy’. There would be many people complaining about restricted permissions. Why somebody can normally smoke marihuana when I am not allowed to use heroine?! Actually ‘breathing the glue’ is legal…

  4. and I cannot agree with a statement that legalization of marihuana would stop the violence. It will dramatically increase people’s stupidity.

  5. @Marcin Grudzień
I do agree with the above comment. I am also supporting the idea of a partial regulation of legalization of marijuana. And indeed as it was mentioned above it is all about politics. Legalization and delegalization is a matter of money. However politicians should be aware of the fact that they cannot play with fire and that whatever they do will influence people.
What do you think? Should we let politicians decide if marijuana should be legal?
Please feel free to comment on this matter.

  6. Well, all of the key arguments in favour of legalisation were said. It's not worse than alkohol or smokes. People who want to smoke pot will do it whether it's legal or not. And it's not because they're addicted (of course there are some who are), but it's because mj is fun and doesn't do much harm. The police are getting better statistics when they're catching young people. It's nonsense, they're often treated as criminals, when - in fact - they do nothing wrong. Then all the paper work comes in, it costs a lot of money and, in the end, nothing that would help anyone comes up.

  7. Unfortunately I cannot agree with the statement that marijuana is treated as cocaine or heroin. Marijuana is not as addictive as other hard drugs. It is tested that marijuana has heeling capabilities and other drugs don’t. If marijuana was to be legalized it should be done under strict regulations. I am not saying it should be completely free accessible to people. If it was to be legalized it has to be regulated by some strict laws.

  8. I agree with Krzysztof Wołk ouer government should legalize marijuana with some restrictions - and with high excise to improve budget:P I'm not sure that Glenn BecK was right, certainly legalization will reduce criminals income.

  9. Hubert I agree with You, you said that marijuana is treated like cocaine or heroin. I said more... everything can be thread for people, not only drugs...
In my opinion everything should be accessed for smart people ;)

  10. ..hard topic. I don't know if it should be legalize.
But:) a few days ago I listened to the radio. And the very interesting interview with some doctor (I don't remember his specialization) caught my attention. He said that marijuana is very useful in some diseases like asthma, SM and glaucoma. He even remember that when he was vey little, his grandma, who had asthma, from time to time smoked some "strange" cigarettes.
soo.. maybe for the sake of science and our health..:)

  11. It is many points for both the pro's and con's about legalize "Mary Jane" ;).

I say make it legal and tax it like they do with cigarettes... In my opinion other more dangerous drugs are available in "market".
Marijuana is one drug that shows so many benefits for ill people... Simple marijuana can help relieve the chronic pain and suffering of people with incurable diseases like cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, etc...

  12. In USA (especially in California) you can get prescription for a medical marihuana. California's doctors treat with it for example lack appetite in patients after/during the chemotherapy, chronic pains and other similar disses. If the patients used the traditional medicine their liver wouldn't live long because of the amount of the prescription anesthetics they would have to take.

  13. In my opinion marijuana should be legalized same as alcohol and instead prohibiting it, government and schools should learn children as they can use it. They should know about dangerous for us and then this is their choice - use it or not. Now it's a good business and is desirable because is prohibited. Many of people use it because this is cool. The reason isn't they want or need it.
