Should government legalize marijuana? Part III

Marijuana’s impact on health

When I started researching that topic I wasn’t really sure of what I would come across. My previous views were pretty much like others: people who smoke marijuana on a regular basis are mellow, slow in reaction etc.

That led me into conclusion that smoking pot leaves serious impact on ones brain as well as health in general.

Meanwhile, the researchers of marijuana and its effects on human brain claim that it is too hard to find out the real effects of marijuana with the help of the techniques we know. It is still unclear how chronic and constant usage of marijuana affects the brain and its functioning. It will take some time to develop certain techniques that could help us examine the effects of marijuana usage.

Below is very interesting video by legitimate professor stating that marijuana (some parts of it) are actually good for the brain.

Q. What is your opinion about that, after hearing the above would you agree that marijuana in small doses can be good for you, just like coffee?

What is marijuana addictive potential?

Estimates from research suggest that about 9 percent of users become addicted to marijuana. This number increases among those who start young (to about 17 percent) and among daily users (25-50 percent).

What are the long term effects of marijuana abuse?

Effects on respiratory system are about the same as smoking cigarettes. Chronic use of marijuana can reduce testosterone level in men. In woman overuse of marijuana can affect the menstrual cycle.

Also I would like to present a few statistics about marijuana cause of deaths as compared to other abusive substances.

Why does a natural plantation like Marijuana that is less harmful than tobacco has to be banned ?

Perhaps, instead of legalizing marijuana we should ban alcohol, cigarettes and other harmful

(and yet legal) substances? What is your opinion on that?

  1. Maybe because marijuana is prohibited there are less deaths from it. Looking at your table and thinking about it makes it completely wrong. If marijuana is prohibited nobody will say he used it. Moreover how do you know if someone after some time used marijuana didn’t die from it in the next years. Cancer develops for a long time. Tobacco is not bad for your health, it is the smoke. If someone would smoke as many joints as cigarettes effect would be the same or even worse, because drugs destroy brain cells.

  2. Good point of view Krzysztof. The answer could be simple. Marihuana is illegal so examination couldn’t be so adequate.
For me it is still an addiction, mental addition. When you do not smoke you think about smoking. When you smoke you started to be worry about a reserve “it’ll be enough for the late”…
Many years ago scientists and doctors encourage people to start smoking. Explanation? That’s good for a thought, that’s relaxing. Now, everybody escape from that.
I’ve heard also that small amount of cigarettes prevents Parkinson’s disease. Would you start smoking just to avid that?

  3. I see it differently. Your interview doesn't convince me as much as example of life of my colleagues, who used to smoke marijuana/hashish regularly. I believe it has an influence on brain's functions. Still I don't think it's much more dangerous than smoking tobacco.
However I suppose that marijuana's influence on human health is more harmful that your table suggests, I'm against current law. If you forbid marijuana, you should forbid tobacco and alcohol. If we remember effects of prohibition in USA, we should rather legalize it.

  4. I found on the internet that studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day. In my opinion when government forbid marijuana, should forbid tobacco as well.

  5. I think that marijuana is not as harmful as people think. I think that there are more deaths from alcohol and tobacco usage than from marijuana. If alcohol and tobacco are legal why is marijuana illegal? We do not have the right to decide what is legal or illegal. All the substances that are not that harmful (and when used properly can even have heeling abilities) should be either legal or illegal but we cannot make the distinction between all those substances. The best example of marijuana legalization is the Czech Republic where possession of marijuana in small doses is legal. Legalization of this substance did not cause any drastic social problems or what is worth deaths.

  6. imagine a big crowd, say a concert. There is a group of very agressive youngs. What do you think: are they drunk or stoned? It's easy to guess, isn't it?

Why is alcohol legal and marijuana not? It's equally harmful for the health of the person who takes it. In addition, alcohol often causes aggression. Smoking's unhealthy but legal. If you ban alcohol or cigarettes it will only benefit the black market, as it's happening with marijuana now. The reasonable way would be to allow it.

  7. For me it is an absurd that Polish government has made a concession on having a drugs for one's personal use. I know that it is a very popular idea nevertheless I don’t agree with that. To my way of thinking such a clever hunt of young voters is not fair. What do you think about it?

  8. I am against legalization.
Recently, I read the article on marijuana legalized in The Netherlands, the government wants Holenderki slowly withdraw from that due to massive dependence that "soft" drug.

Given the well-known ability of Poles, associated with over-interpretation I think, that it could be tragic consequences ...

  9. Hahaha, maybe it is true that Marijuana "have" zero deaths per Year, otherwise maybe don't kill us "directly" If it was legal, people would be killing themselves/others in accidents or overdose since they are so high, they don't even know what they are doing... ;)

  10. For me the more drugs are legalized the less money gets the mob. Less money for the mob==less crime. It's simple. If somebody wants to take drugs he/she will find way to obtain them. There not only illegal drugs but also legal as: tea, coffee, alcohol, cigarets. If cigarets were invented in our time it would have been illegal.

  11. I don't understand that marijuana is prohibited in Poland but alcohol or cigarettes aren't. Should be all or nothing permitted. In the excess they has similar effect, human has slow reaction time and not control yourself. One people likes drink alcohol, but the others likes cigarettes, marijuana, coffee etc. All of them are dangerous for us in large doses, but if reasonable it give us relaxation, well-being and humor. If someone needs it - why not use it? Government should learn people how use (at school) but not prohibit it because if something is forbidden it's desirable.
