Part two: Causes of global warming and its effects

One thing that causes global warming is electrical pollution. Electricity causes pollution in many ways. In most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create electricity. Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural resources. Some examples of fossil fuels are oil and petroleum. Many pollutants (chemicals that pollute the air, water, and land) are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned. CO2 and other of this chemicals are greenhouse gasses.

Apart from man-made causes of global warming, one could ask aren’t temperature changes a natural process?

The average global temperature and concentrations of carbon dioxide (one of the major greenhouse gases) have fluctuated on a cycle of hundreds of thousands of years as the Earth's position relative to the sun has varied. As a result, ice ages have come and gone.

However, for thousands of years now, emissions of GHGs (Greenhouse Gasses) to the atmosphere have been balanced out by GHGs that are naturally absorbed. As a result, GHG concentrations and temperature have been fairly stable. Occasionally, other factors briefly influence global temperatures. Volcanic eruptions, for example, emit particles that temporarily cool the Earth's surface. But these have no lasting effect beyond a few years. Now, humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by more than a third since the industrial revolution. Changes this large have historically taken thousands of years, but now are happening over the course of decades.

Therefore causes of global warming can be classified into man-made and naturally caused. The changes in climate do not go by without having a serious impact on the life on earth.

One of the most serious effects of Global Warming that people have to be aware of the effects on the health of individuals. The rise in temperature due to Global Warming is known to be supportive to various viral diseases like the west Nile virus and malaria.

High temperature also causes the concentration of ozone in the lower atmosphere. Ozone is known to be a harmful pollutant that causes respiratory problems such as damaging lung tissues and therefore cause complications for people with asthma.

Apart from health hazards brought from increased temperatures there are also economical and social areas affected by global warming. For an instance may cause a decline in agriculture due to the role of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis. Carbon Dioxide prevents photorespiration and therefore is the cause of the damage of many crops.

Also Global Warming results in a rise in the sea levels. Therefore, this will result in an increase of the costs of the coastal defense. This is also dangerous, because the most important trade ports are always at the coast of any area for trade reasons.

Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns have also global effects on extreme weather events: They increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes.

(New Orleans after hurricane Katrina)

Global warming has a number of effects on the nature and atmosphere. Effects of global warming, like a decreased snow level, increased temperature and other weather changes will have a affect not only on humans but also entire ecosystems. These ecosystems will change and cause many traditional inhabitants to leave their inhabitants. This may cause extinction of species.

Here is the short youtube clip that shows the direct effect of global warming on polar bears:

Q.

1. Is the government doing enough to reduce CO2 emissions?

2. Do you know any positive aspects of global Warming?

3. Do you know other cases of environmental cataclysms caused by global warming?

10 comments:

  1. 1) They should stop participating in this at all.

    2) It would be warmer so if this theory would be true then Russia should emmit as much CO2 as possible in order to warm up frozen lands of Siberia.

    3) Climate is and was always changing and I don't see a reason for attributing these changes to 'global warming'

By the way what do you say on this? http://www.petitionproject.org/index.php

Over 9000 scientits with PhD signed this petition, it's 15 times more then there are in IPCC and these are only american scientists. There is also report by United States Senate with the same conclusion.

  2. 1) Polish government is only concerned with money, there is no money in false pretences.

    2) If it ever existed, I guess we would have to adapt to the new temperature, which would be quite pleasant!

    3) Due to the fact that there are no proven cataclysms caused by global warming I think I cannot..

  3. I don't thing those questions are inappropriate. Where is the discussion about Global Worming? Why author implies that, everyone agree with him. As you can see its opposite :)
I know one effect of theory cold “Global Worming”. People from big concerns see money in it. They made fashion from it.
    For example:
    - just look at this advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNeEVkhTutY
    - celebrities from Hollywood buys Toyota Prius and brag about how eco they are.

  4. Well, yes, the fact that people brag about hybrid cars is an annoying thing. Although the whole initiative with hybrid cars is not so stupid after all. People need to be delivering new technologies, in order for the civilisation to grow. Remember that human civilization as of 2010 is still a level 0 civilization (according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale).

If that's "global warming" causing the development, than it's a one positive aspect I would say.

  5. Well if hybrid cars would be better then people would buy them without additional incentives. I'd disagree then there is a positive relation between this fraud and technological development.

For example we focus on inefficient wind farms instead on improving nuclear power plants, if we would be able to build fussion power plant energy would be much cheaper.

  6. This Kardashev scale is very interesting, but also very theoretical. Back to the hybrid cars. Maybe those cars are technically advanced, but not efficient. Normal diesel VW Golf use less fuel and produce less CO2. They use little bit less fuel, in compare with normal petrol engine, but they hasn't got ecofriendly batteries and it's not something new.

There are funny things (or strange) about eco cars. When someone have really good idea it strangely disappear. For example great GM EV1 from the 90's. It was an electric car, which could travel 200 kilometers without recharging. GM produced about 1000 cars and in 2002 they destroyed them! GM also has great patent and could produce very efficient batteries for mass production. They sold this patent to Chevron – big oil company and it disappear. Strange?

By the way electric cars were invented in XIX century!!

  7. As i said earlier there is no global warming!!! It is only a lie!!! Watch film on discovery talking about this non exist problem...

  8. I have to say somethink about trading right of CO2 emissions. That is proof for what I wrote in other comment - if someone makes those limits of emission so high that some countries are able to sell them, why even do that if nobody really cares about enviroment. I don`t know what govement do to reduce emissions. I also have to agree with Artur, I don`t belive in global warming...

  9. 1. Is the government doing enough to reduce CO2 emissions?

Our government doing something to take care of it?? I didn'y heard anything about it in our media so I don't know;/

    2. Do you know any positive aspects of global Warming?

    It will be warm:)

    3. Do you know other cases of environmental cataclysms caused by global warming?

I heard only about those that were mentioned in Your presentation.

  10. This is very difficult to stop global warming, because it’s very expensive for normal people and big companies. Try to say all of them to don’t use light in the day, change car to electric car or transport, stop to use computer for 10 hour a day, stop watch tv more then 2 hours a day… etc.
Electricity goes from power stations that make a lot of CO2, which mean that all things that we use (a lot of them are using electricity) are CO2 problem, and cars millions of cars which produce billions square meters of carbon dioxide every day. Next problem is tree stretch… but two days ago I read that are some places in our planet ocean that absorb CO2 maybe this will be our hope.
