The phenomenon of globalization - advantages and disadvantages

PART I

The aim of my presentation is to describe a phenomenon of globalization and try to
consider the main advantages and disadvantages that are essentially connected with the subject. I am sure that you have already known a lot about globalization but I hope that thanks to my presentation your knowledge will be broadened. I’ve divided my presentation into several parts that will hopefully make it more comprehensible and by the way more interesting. The particular parts of my presentation will cover the following aspects. When you have some questions or there are some ambiguities fell free to interrupt me. At first I’d like to clarify what the globalization in fact is.

What is globalization?

As it’s a real complex process it’s hard to give one definition. The interesting fact is that each of hundreds of new books published last year included its own definition. Many see it as a primarily economic phenomenon, involving the increasing interaction, or integration, of national economic systems through the growth in international trade, investment and capital flows.

However, one can also point to a rapid increase in cross-border social, cultural and technological exchange as part of the phenomenon of globalization.

Left critics of globalization define the word quite differently, presenting it as worldwide drive toward a globalized economic system dominated by multinational corporate trade and banking institutions that are not accountable to democratic processes or national governments.
As we see there are many possibilities of defining the phenomenon and everybody can find his favourite one for sure.

McDonald’s as a global company

For me, the best example of global company is McDonald’s, which is present in almost every country. In whole world the Big Mac looks the same, taste the same and cost the same… The funny thing is that the Big Mac is one of a economics indicators (Purchasing Power Parity - PPP). Briefly – Big Mac should coast the same in whole world, so PPP tells you how many Big Macs you can buy in your country (PLN) for the equality of USA original price (USD). I don’t think that many people use this… :-).

I also like the idea of franchising, which McDonald’s in one of the top leaders. Franchising is the practice of using another firm's successful business model. If you want to open your own McDonalds restaurant you have to pay license and perfume some strict criteria. I think this is a brilliant solution to build a global company.

  1. For me, globalization is a process of making everything available globally. It affects culture, economics, knowledge and probably everything else.

Like probably everything out there, this process has pros and cons. There's global knowledge, but there are also people that loose jobs because production goes to Asia. I really don't know if it's bad or good for the world, nonetheless I tend to see advantages of that most of the time.

I really can't say that there's any company that I like.

Globalization has good and bad sides. Hard to say if it's positive phenomenon or maybe more negative..I don't know ..however I think we can't live isolated from other people, cultures, countries because we share the same planet thats why we should cooperate:)
And about global company I have a high opinion of Apple. They're solid reliable and they just have a good products what is really the most important thing for me.

  3. For me globalization means integration and easier access to products produced in foreign countries. On one hand, this process seems to be a step ahead. We have an easy access to products manufactured outside the countries we live in. Provided people in less developed countries have money, they can purchase the products that are available on the market in the more developed countries. As for Poland, globalization is for sure a step ahead. Thanks to the process of globalization, foreign investors with foreign capital invest in our country as this is a cheaper location for business than e.g. Switzerland or England. On the other hand, as globalization enables the investors to move their place of business anywhere they choose, it means that after it stops to be so beneficial to run business in e.g. Poland, they can easily move to a country where the cost of conducting business would be even cheaper, without caring for the people they used to employ. As a result, after some time, people who used to earn a lot in international organizations loose their jobs, they do not have money to pay their mortgages back and the crisis begins. So as we can see, there are both good and bad sides of this phenomenon.

  5. For me globalisation is a process which leads to changes in economy, polity and culture.

I think that it's a positive process, as long as it does preserve local traditions and customs.

One of advantages of globalisation is integration of banking systems, which I think has been mentioned by one of the preceding speakers. The others, worth mentioning as well, are material and power exchanges. Although as Michal said this is not a new process in the civilisation. It existed since the humanity, as Homo sapiens sapiens :)

My favourite global company is Dell cause it's better and cheaper that the almighty Apple ;]

  6. Globalization describes the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of political ideas through communication, transportation, and trade. I think it is positive process but we have to remember about our history and traditions. I don`t have any favorite global company.

  7. I agree with yours definitions of "globalization" and for me it's very positive, necessary and quite obvious process today. But as it's on the world globalization has some negative aspects. I'm sure that this process gave us more goods than bad things.
Now what about global company... I don't have any favorite, but I like Apple for their ideas.

  8. We can already talk about the positives of globalization. The most important effects and at the same time benefits are better conditions for science and technology development, and the possibility of better exploitation of their achievements, new possibilities to solve existential problems of disabled people, new chances for economic development.

  9. Globalization can be seen as the copying process. Copied can be everything, starting with the human genetic code, the strategies of geniuses formerly called talent, which can be learned at the appropriate training. Copying is possible since the era of globalization is preceded by the information revolution. The genetic code is a sequence consisting of the appropriate combinations of nucleotides arranged in proper order. Words are composed of
letters arranged in proper order, the opinion of the proper order of words forms a theory, ideology, information. Content in digital form is made up of bits. Thought processes are made up of elements (representations) arranged in
    sequences.

The question is what is worth copying and what we should delete .
